Then why aren't Raven's hoofs damaged after the rocky 50's he's done?Conditioned to rock & pavement damage does not occurSimply not true. Conditioning certainly helps to minimize the damage--but does not eliminate it entirely. Increased sole callous decreases or eliminates the chance of stone bruisesDecreases, certainly. Eliminates, no. And sole callus can (and does) also increase in properly conditioned AND PROPERLY SHOD horses that wear shoes. Then Raven should've been stone bruised after Prineville, Pacific Crest & Bandit. He flew over lot's of harsh rock on all of those rides & came through sound. These comments imply that Raven is a fast, tough Endurance horse who though barefoot, completes successfully, ride after ride with never a problem. Here is Raven's record for Endurance rides from AERC.org: 2006 - two rides, 2 completions 2005 - four rides, 2 "pulled lame", 1 "RO", 1 completion 2004 - seven rides, 3 "pulled lame", 4 completions 2003 - no rides 2002 - three rides, 3 "pulled lame" 2001-1999 - fourteen rides, 5 "pulled lame", 1 "RO", 8 completions Total - 30 rides, 13 "pulled lame", 2 "RO", 15 completions Assuming that in addition he completed both the 2006 Pacific Crest and the 2006 Bandit Springs, that would give him 32 rides with 17 completions but through 2005, 28 rides with 13 completions. If he was shod for his 3 Tevis rides, 1999-2005 = 25 rides barefoot with 11 completions. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
