Have you carefully analyzed your mare's diet to make sure it is 
correctly balanced for calcium/potasium?  Maybe something as simple as 
not feeding alfalfa would solve the problem.  Also, I'm no expert, but 
calcium carbonate is just ground up seashells and I don't think it's 
absorbed easily enough to be a last minute, i.e., ride day, solution.
