Re: [RC] Big Horn 100 - II//Unsuccessful Attempts--To Try Is ToSucceed - Beverley H. Kane, MDGreat story, Steph! I flagged the installments for when I could get a round tuit, read the 1st 2 over the last 2 days, looking fwd to the last one.* One thing that stays w/ me is this notion of "unsuccessful attempts." How do we define success? Many people have posted to RC saying they learned more from the rides they DNFd than from the no brainers they breezed through in the Top 10. I personally know people who have done 50, 60, 90, even 98 1/2 miles of a 100 only to suffer a freak occurrence that robbed them of that buckle. There are also those who succeed by the finish criterion but have overridden their horses, some of whom don't successfully recover. With Big Horn done and a lot of people lost or overtime, and with Tevis approaching, one has to celebrate the success of people who even get to start. Someone offered me a Tevis horse, and of course there's Potato's deal, but I don't even have the 300 miles you need to enter. You guys going out of Robie Pk on 8/5 are already success stories. I prefer "DNF" (did not finish) to "unsuccessful." Since winning as defined by the AERC motto isn't always synonymous with success, I propose a corollary to "To Finish Is to Win." "To Try (Your Best) Is to Succeed." Beverley...*who is going out to run now in 85° heat to train for crewing at Tevis, and who will then come in, sit down w/ a big glass of gf juice, and read Big Horn III ----------- On 7/20/06 10:48 PM, "Steph Teeter" <stephteeter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Regina has 13 Big Horn buckles, and 5 unsuccessful attempts - that's a lot of Big Horns. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
