RE: [RC] [RC] [RC] OT-horse wormer question - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Ditto Susan's comments. But I'd add that doing a fecal and getting a negative result is not necessarily indicative of a lack of worms. It depends on the season of the year, and can also be affected by the general debility of the horse. If the horse is really in bad shape, the worms may not be healthy enough to be shedding eggs, either. Heidi Agreed. There are species of worms that are capable of encysting themselves in the walls of the gut and riding out the storm during adverse conditions (and not shedding eggs), and then when life gets better outside, they come out in droves and wreak havoc. I'll always believe a positive fecal count, but tend to remain suspicious of a negative one.
