Re: [RC] Want GPS. What do i need to know ? - Sisu West RanchThe easiest way to get started is to get a good book, they are cheap. When you know a bit, any dealer can show you various models so you can see which one you want.I am getting set up to teach map, compass, and GPS courses to my BCH club so I purchased a few books. I can recommend: GPS for Dummies. Like all the "..for Dummies" it will teach you more than you need to know in an easy to follow manner. "Wilderness Navigation", Bob Burns & Mike Burns, Pub by The Mountaineers, 1001 SW Klickitat Way, Suite 201, Seattle It is inexpensive and has a good chapter on GPS These are available from Amazon, and most outdoor stores and book stores. It is my personal feeling that basic models and a paper map or maping software on a laptop are better than the expensive models with builtin maps. The screens are just to small. Also, if you intend to leave the marked trails in your local park, basic map and compass knowlege is also needed., both for safety and convenience.
