Steph:

You state:<<<or maybe you could sign up for the AERC
50-elevator, and the FEI 100, and then if you want to stop
at 50....>>>

Why would a rider go to the trouble to do all the FEI and
USEF paperwork for the horse and rider and then contemplate
the above? I would presume that if a person went to the
trouble of entering the FEI 100 mile ride they have the
experience and confidence that they can handle a 100 mile
ride.

and actually it's a CEI** also (FEI 50 mile)! which is
pretty worthless but I just found out that I
(unintentionally) requested FEI sanctioning for both 100 and
50 mile distances on the sanctioning form and it was
approved, and to un-do the 50 mile FEI portion I have to
send in a signed form, blah blah, and I hate the paperwork
so will probably just leave it the way it is...

So I wonder if there is such a thing as an FEI elevator
ride... or maybe you could sign up for the AERC 50-elevator,
and the FEI 100, and then if you want to stop at 50....

:)

Dabney - the ride is in the NW region (maybe you were
looking in Mountain?)

It's May 20

100 AERC/FEI

and .....

50-100 Elevator :)

Steph

(which means the 50's and 100's will start together at 5:30
AM!)

Steph:

This post made me look for your ride on AERC (also crewless;
some say clueless), but couldn't find it.

Would you post the info (date, location) here for us?

Thanks!

the Owyhee!)

I have to agree with some of you that FEI can make it less
fun, more
stressful, etc. (as a rider and as a ride manager!) It
helps for the RM
to have a done a couple, and it really makes a difference
to have
staff (FEI vets, judges, stewards, TD's) that works well
together, and
keeps things friendly and low key. Having an overzealous
steward can
be a bit of a nuisance. It's a balancing act for the most
part.

Karen - to answer your questions:

Now I have questions for you Steph. ;) How hard would it
be to do
your May 100 without a crew? >>

Shoudn't be a problem. I'm still fine tuning the loops but
there won't
be a 'designated crewing area' - you can go wherever you
want after
you see the vet. We've changed the vetting area in camp so
it's right
next to the parking area now, which makes it easier to
just go to your
own trailer for holds. There will be a 50 mile loop though
with one
out-vet check which you
will use twice. So you'll need to send stuff out, but
we'll take stuff out
for folks that don't have a crew.

Can we just go in and get our pulse and then go pull our
tack and
come
back
to vet (without having to have an argument)? >>

Good question. I don't know why not... RM's would have to
set the
pulse gate traffic flow up to allow that. But, we (Arabian
Nights,
Owyhee 100) are doing this a little different now - riders
go directly
to the vets after entering the 'pulse gate' rather than
having
pulse-takers as an intermediate
step. With a lot of vets this is possible, and in the
event that you enter
the pulse gate but a vet isn't available your horse can
eat while waiting,
and you are not losing any time while you wait.

How many vetchecks do you require tack off >>-
Tack/no-tack is pretty
much
up to the head-vet (Mike Foss is our head vet), with input
from ride
managers, etc. I don't know the answer to this yet, but my
guess is
that most of the checks will be tack-off.

how many vetchecks, out of and in camp are there>>
Probably (still deciding) the first 2 holds will be out
(over by the
river)
and the last 3 will be in camp.

, and how many hours/mins. of hold times do you have? >>
probably 30,
50,
60, 50, 30 - might change according to weather. I like to
give pretty
long holds in general. And this will be close to the
summer solstice,
lots of daylight, and a pretty easy course, nobody should
be worried
about going overtime.

I would guess that most FEI riders have crews, whereas a
lot of
regular
AERC
riders don't, and that is where part of trying to get thru
those types
of rides becomes difficult.>>

I understand - and will really try to encourage 'regular'
AERC riders,
first time 100's, etc - by making it as easy as possible
w/o crew.

Keep the suggestions coming - we can make this work.

Plus I'm thinking of sanctioning this as an elevator ride
:))) (50's
and 100's will start together at 5:30 AM....)

Steph
