In Arabs, the gene for "true roan" is not present. It's very common amongst
certain family lines of arabs to have what is referred to as Rabicano. The
inheritance of this, at this moment is not well understood. The roaning
originantes in the area of the flank and fans outward. At the least, you'd
see roan flecks in the flanks. The most i've ever seen is it extending up to
the ribs, causing a banding effect, plus roaning on the hindquarters, all of
it having the appearance of originating in the flanks. White hairs at the
tail head, even a stripe or two, are not uncommon.

The sabino pattern can also cause roaning, but will most often be
accompanied with 4 white stocks or stockings (often with jagged edges) and a
large blaze +/- white on the lower lip. It often is otherwise very similar
to Rabicano. It's inheritance is not perfectly understood either.

Ellan.

And another question for you genetics experts:  What can you tell me
about roan in the arab lines?
