Re: [RC] What does "bonding" with a horse mean to you? - Maryanne Gabbani
(after picking myself up off the floor and stopping laughing) Nope. Wish it was that simple. The jewel of my heart is a 20 yr old Arab mare that spent the first three years of her life with me (from 3.5 yrs old to 6 yrs old) being threatened with an imminent departure to the closest cart driver....a hideous fate in Egypt. We were green on green. She hadn't a clue and I hadn't ridden for twenty years so the sorting out of wishes and abilities took a long time. But my kids know that they'd be sold before Dory would. She is my first choice for any ride any time, but I have to be careful with her because she has leg issues and I don't want to break her. I'm lucky enough to have two sons from her who are wonderful boys, but their mom has the first spot in my heart. I can ride her without a saddle and usually have the reins just looped on my saddle or bareback pad because we have a level of communication that doesn't require any mechanics.?
I do depend on the sense that I can work with a horse before I bring one into my group, but that special bond is the result of time, trouble and luck.

Is it something you recognize in a horse the first time you see him or do you have to play a hunch and hope that it develops?
