I don't know if it is so much that the
leather is poor quality as whether the leather is dyed red, as in "red
latigo." I don't think cows' hides come in that color, so they must
dye it. <g>
Is it only poor quality leather that "bleeds" on horses? I had
a couple of leather headstalls that bled on my grey horse when he sweated,
leaving stripes on his face. I wasn't fond of that look. Just curious, if I
got a "good quality" leather headstall, will that not happen?

don't recall where I got one of the headstalls. The other one was given to me.
Made from leather scraps on the spot by a kind soul that took pity on me when
he saw my horse sporting a hay string braided bridle since I couldn't afford
anything better at the time. Ah, the memories.
