Even if he is able to breed there's no guarantee he'll be a good sire. Think about it, how many people want to have a Kentucky Derby Winner...and they got one. I have no doubt they're fond of him. It's not like he's a claimer they picked up last week and hadn't really gotten fond of. Trying to save an animal at all costs isn't always the kindest thing you can do for them. Not saving some of these horses who break down may be the right thing to do when you're already in that spot. Their statement that they will monitor his attitude and when they can't control his pain they'll give up is a good decision to me. I've seen some awful things when owners refused to give up on a horse *thinking* they were kind in wanting to save them.
