different bones broke, and one of them was in over 20 pieces.
Thoughts? You betcha. One, genetic. Nothing but
speed matters, the horses are to some extent expendable, the industry
thrives on being able to sell lots of prospects, and the careers are
short, so there is no incentive to breed for sufficient substance to
take the stress. Two, age. These horses are babies.
Three, conditioning. These horses do not as a rule get long, slow
distance to build bone before going into their speed phase of
training. And they live in stalls and small paddocks, where they
don't exercise all that much "on their own." As for nutrition,
naw... These horses at this level do get the best of the best in
that department.
