I've seen a couple of horses tie up at a walk when started right out onto a long climb. Mares are more likely to tie up when in heat too. I'd be looking at whether the mare had been confined...or pretending she was by staying in one place all day or night to avoid biting bugs. A vet told a friend's whose horse tied up this spring, that it was because of the lush grass he was on being high in carbs. That was the first time I'd ever heard anyone blame grass. I'm betting against the beet pulp connection.
