Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Small Acreage-MOW!!! - Jon . LindermanI use a 60" swisher trail cut mower (http://www.swisherinc.com/index.html). Most of us with less than 10 acres divide things up into paddocks, fields, etc and a big tracor often isn't the right fit & I'm not one of those people who can afford one of those wonderful compact kubota or jd tractors. A trail mower is like a brush hog but it has its own engine, usually about 12.5 to 15 horses dedicated just to the baldes. TSC has them for about $1500, but the one with the Honda engine is more. I got mine used from an equipment repair shop but also see them on ebay all the time. Pull it with a riding tractor or a quad if you've got one. You can adjust to about 5" max, and I think a bit taller on the newer models. I mow the paddocks almost weekly and it keeps the grass more even. The fields I mow about every 2 weeks. we have a 1/4 mile grass "track" we use to train std breds for racing and my endurance horse & I mow that tight, like 2.5". My horses do not eat the grass even but pick and choose their poop, pee, and eating areas. By mowing as often as I do I keep the weeds under better control and the grass grows nicer. It cuts down on hay because they have more edible forage. Jon K. Linderman, Ph.D., FACSM
