Re: [RC] [RC] Run-in Sheds - Sisu West RanchFeeling miserable and cold or conversely uncomfortably hot is a rather subjective thing. Thus it is almost impossible to know what another species of animal is experiencing. An example: Birds have one more color recepter in the eye than humans. They also can detect the near ultra violet that humans can not. These are facts. On the other hand, we can not describe or understand the extra colors they experience. Interesting article about this in latest Scientific American. The best we can do is to observe horses and see what they do under various conditions. We probably are not wrong to assume that if they go from a 35 F rain into a run in shed, they are more comfortable in the shed than in the cold rain. On the other hand if it is -20 F, calm wind, and they are standing around in the pasture ignoring the shed they probably are not uncomfortable. It is my, admittedly not scientific, observation that if there is a cold rain, many horses shiver. If they have a choice they will get out of the rain. My conclusion is that a shivering horse is not as comfortable as a non-shivering horse.
