RE: [RC] Hill training vs. the flat - Susan & Jerry MilamYou've got to look at this at least in two ways- cardiac
benefits/muscle-tendon benefits. The hill work is definitely more anaerobic work
for the heart and it works different muscle groups than the flat.

My intention is to through my hat in the ring for my first ride in the
fall. I have about five miles of trail behind my house (not much) ,
however it is all rugged hills. You are going up, or you are going
down. Steep going which really gives the horse a good workout. I'm
riding an older mare, she's 18 and this is her second year of being
ridden. Next season I'll be starting my filly on trails. But for now,
Puddin' is my ride. Now for the question:
5 miles of rugged up and down = ____ miles of training on the
flat? In order to train on the flat I'll have to haul on the
weekend. I'm thinking I'm training different muscle sets on hills than
flat? Trying to get a feel for where she's at to determine which mileage
loop of trail (distance) to hit next when we go for the flat.
Sidenote: The Phebes is looking out of two beautiful brown eyes for
the first time in almost two months. Some of the advice given was
very helpful. Daily cleansing of the area around the eyes, alternating and
washing fly masks diligently, an eyewash etc. Now if you could just do
something about her chasing dogs out of her pasture....I thought she'd make
mince meat out of a stray that visited the pasture area last night.
