Re: [RC] foal born with crooked legs - Kari HanesJessica,When my mare was born she came up to the barn dragging one leg. We used PVC pipe cut length ways, wrapped the leg good with thick cotton and vet wrap, then put the split pipe on and wrapped again with vet wrap to hold in place (use kotex under the edges of the PVC top and bottom). She was pretty awkward walking and getting up/down but there was no way I was going to take her from her mama at that age and put her on stall rest alone. After a couple weeks she was standing upright again, we've never had a problem with that leg since. She did shows and 4-H for a few years and now does LDs. Hope this helps! I've had a lot of people email me offering advice and its appreciated. I just want to clarify that this isn't a mild case that will correct itself with exercise, the foal was allowed to walk around (hobble is more like it) and stay with his dam the first week and his legs got progressively worse. They are to the point where the knee joint on the left leg is bent to the right so much that it is centered almost under the right shoulder. One of the reasons he was weaned so young is because he couldn't stand well enough to nurse as he needed. Her vet will be back out today and I gave her several links on casting and braces for this problem. Please keep this guy in your prayers. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
