RE: [RC] Negative Reactor Panel - Pam BailieHi - I use a reactor panel saddle and regarding more weight on the forehand I am lucky if my hind shoes last 4 weeks - I do not ride an Arab but I am a competitive endurance rider and have been thrilled with my RP - The saddle keeps my horses back cool - NEVER moves and it is the most comfortable saddle I have ridden - Pam Bailie -----Original Message----- From: ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Laney Humphrey Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2006 9:49 AM To: Kathy Ramspott Cc: ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [RC] Negative Reactor Panel Just three comments: 1. Unless you are collecting all these saddle comments because you love making lists, you are over analyzing the subject! People love to talk, especially about high dollar purchases such as saddles. Back when dinosaurs walked and I was in college taking Psych. 1, I learned about the human tendency to talk up high dollar purchases just made but also to look for negatives about choices not made and even about the choice that was made. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name for this phenomenon but over my life, I've sure done it myself and heard others doing it too! 2. No two horses are the same, not even any two arabs and not even any two horse (arab)/rider combos doing endurance. Given that, make your best guess as to what will work for you and YOUR horse and give it a try. BTW, ReactorPanel has a wonderful trial feature. 3. You didn't name the person you quote or describe his/her credentials for making the statement you found. The writer sounds "knowledgeable" but that doesn't necessarily mean he/she is! And the quote doesn't detail how the conclusions were arrived at. I'm not criticizing the statement just saying that, as a statement, it doesn't deserve any more or less weight than others. 4. OK, a fourth comment. I still sell my book, "Choosing a saddle for endurance and long distance riding." Since I wrote it many, many new saddle types have been developed, including ReactorPanel, but the process I outline for defining appropriate saddles for your horse and you are still valid (& greatly appreciated). Sorry John T. for the shameless plug! Email me if you're interested in buying a copy. Laney Kathy Ramspott wrote: Of course, as soon as I post this I find this. Does anyone have any comment about this review I just found regarding Reactor Panel Saddles: "*Dislikes:* The reactor panel has been developed to give a larger weight bearing surface using panels, similar to the traditional western saddle panels....It ecourages the horse to drop through the shoulders resulting in the horse going on the forehand. In some cases, this causes the saddle to slip forward putting even more weight onto the shoulder and foreleg region. By riding different breeds in this saddle, I have felt far too much movement through this saddle, which suggests that, instead of it moving effortlessly over the shoulder blade, as recommended by the fitters, it is actually being pushed back and twisted by the action of the shoulder when performing lateral work. I have also found that in most cases, when standing straight, the panel sits nicely over the scapula and over the lumber area of the longisumus dorsi, but causes bridging across the spinalis and thoracic region of the longissimus dorsi. These are saddles that have recently been fitted by a qualified reactor panel fitter. I have heard a lot of good reviews from riders saying that their horses go really well in it when changing saddles, but could this be that it is just releiving an area of pressure that may have become sore from a previous illfitting saddle? In which case any saddle which is fitted properly will result in the horse going better." Kathy Ramspott wrote:Hi everyone, I've gotten to the point that I have a notebook with all my notes on everthing that is being said about all saddles used (within reason) on arabs for distance riding. I have pros and cons and prices and general observations. My question is does anyone have anything NEGATIVE to say about RP saddles. So far it is the ONLY saddle that I haven't found a complaint about but there are is also a boatload of information about them and I admit I have not read all archived posts. I have gone to other distance websites to read what they all have to say including treeless chat boards. so again, I don't need anyone to go on about how much they love their RP, just anything negative about an RP on an arab for distance riding.
