Re: [RC] [RC] Non Arabs - Catfish DanielsI used to be a Quarterhorse person - and quarter horses only. Then 10 years ago I got my first Arab and was a long-time believer that Arabs are indeed the only horses that could excel in endurance. When I met Pam Bailie a few years ago I couldn't imagine why on earth she was stuck on riding her huge paint (Skipa Slipa on Ice), when indeed she seemed to really like endurance and training for Tevis. Well, for one she loves her horse(s), who happen to be non-arabs. Secondly at one ride my intention was to do a 65 miler and ride with Pam together, and the fact was - we couldn't hang with her. I was amazed at the ability of her horse. And the accomplishments her horse had done since then is quite remarkable - Arab or non arab.My regular riding and training buddy rides a 16.1 Paint, who already had a bowed tendon from a pasture accident about 5 years ago. Since his recovery, that horse had never gone lame again and sets an incredible pace. At endurance rides he always places top 5 and is looking great afterwards - and he logs in a LOT of training miles. His second horse is a palomino "something". Nobody really knows what she is...although it's very clear that there's not an ounce of Arab in her. She was a rescue from a feed lot, has one very "scary" looking club foot, and a comformation that describes anything but an optimal endurance horse. That horse has never been lame and can set a pace with a trot that will take your breath away. Lisa is also a top 5 horse. I guess I'm just really a believer of what's already been said. It's your love for your horse and your dedication towards their training that will determine your success in endurance whether you ride or race. I now really enjoy seeing more and more different breeds of horses at the starting lines.
