Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] unregistered pure-breds - Jessica Cameron

Cyclone, was bought by my dad from one of Wayne Newton's trainers. He was born with a slight club foot on the right front, so therefore was not registered because he wasn't good enough to show, but we have the paperwork to register him but what is the point in paying $500 to get a 21 year old gelding papered just to satisfy those people who are so enthralled with papers. Cysco I bought from a gentleman who had both of the parent's papers, which I have. The owner of the stud and the mare died a couple years ago and the stud died before Cysco was born and the mare died shortly after Cysco was born. Both are out of pure-bred arabians. Just because they aren't registered does not mean that they aren't arabians. Both of these horses will live out their days with me, so papers really don't matter. But it really irritates me that people who are so enthralled with papers that they can't recognize that yes they are pure-bred arabians, they just don't have the "formal papers" to prove it. And I'm not going to pay the $$ just to prove to everyone that yes they are pure-bred.

. . . the boys, both unregistered pure-bred Arabians . . . .

IMO, without the "chain of evidence" provided by the registration pedigree (and a registry that is totally anal about verifying the accuracy of that parentage chain) one can't say that a horse is a pure-bred anything. It might look like an Arabian (be phenotypically Arabian), but in its genes (genotypically) it could be a mix. Which for the purposes of using a horse for pleasure or in a sport might be just fine. But to be able to brag that a horse is a "pure bred Arabian", you really need proof. Otherwise it is a very attractive and athletic grade horse that looks like most people's concept of an Arabian.
