[RC] Non-Arabs in Endurance - Nikki McCormack

Hi all,

I am probably way behind on this, but I think that is where I usually am. :)

When we bought my husbands current horse, we did it with riding endurance in mind, but more importantly, I looked for any breed of horse so long as it was suited to my husbands temperment and build. We looked at some arabs, but none really had a disposition I thought he would like. In the end, we bought a Spanish Mustang. He may not be perfectly suited to the sport, but my husband loves to work with him, and that is far more important.

In the few rides we made it to we have learned that he does have a longer recovery time than my arab, so we have to be attentive to that. He has only just learned that it is ok to pee while under saddle and is still learning to drink well. My arab might be held back in how well he can do in endurance because we ride together, but it is more fun that way and I never have to worry about overriding my boy so long as I am paying attention to what my husband horse needs.

Sometimes arabs just aren't the right kind of horse for the rider.

Nikki (and the boys)
