[RC] Shagya Arabian--what are they? - Donna Coss

If you wish to read the Horse World article, you must click on the Title on this page or go here

There are many that are still confused about the Shagya Arabian! First of all it is a 200 year old breed bred to be the "ideal cavalry horse"! Tough, great riding qualities, such as bigger bone, proper shoulder and hip angles, strong back and loins for weight carrying, and big, round dense hooves. They are an Arabian based breed! Definately NOT a strain!

There is an excellent article that was published in Arabian Horse world
in 1983 that explains the "difference". The article is reprinted in
it's entirety at

http://www.shagya-arabian-horses-asav.org/about.html Very
interesting and complete article!

This Shagya breed registry has also finished the rules & regs for registering the wonderful Shagya cross, the ANGLO SHAGYA which is Thoroughbred with at least 25% Shagya. This Anglo Shagya seems to be an exceptional sport horse and the cross has produced a number of competitive, talented horses.
