i've looked into treeless saddles in the past but my mare has a v. high
wither and they seem to be more suited for round horses. also, i was a
little concerned about the way the stirrups are attached to the saddles. i
think it was the torsion that has a narrow ring that goes under the seat to
which the stirrup bars attach. i was concerned that the weight of my
body in the stirrups would result in a v. localized pressure on her back.

Marta and all.....
Many new treeless saddles have come on the market
in the past several years; and quite a few being tested on endurance rides.
Both the Startrekk Comfort, and Trekker Dressage have cut back slots for
withers, and very high pommel arches (plus choices of pommel widths).....both
these also have movable panels under the saddle on either side of the spine
that can adjusted and moved.
The Barefoot Saddles also seem to work quite well
for high-withered horses as they are peaked up quite high under the pommel
arch.
Many of the new treeles also have multiple
stirrup positions, flexible pommels, movable seats, etc.
Again, huge changes in the past several
years.
Some that -appear- to have design flaws (stirrup
hung from ring over back)...actually work quite well when the correct pad is
used.
Feel free to check out the yahoo treeless saddle
group......there is an extensive links page with different distributors and
manufacturers. Many of the distributors are really checking these
saddles out personally, and offer test and trial periods.
