RE: [RC] Ulcer Treatments - Lori Bertolucci

Steph, is Ulcerguard something that can be used during competion?
I ask that because we have a quarterhorse that was in training for his futurity year in cutting. I wanted to pull him for a while due to symptoms of ulcers, burping, poor performance, high stress, hair coat showing poor condition...things that weren't there when he started training, but the trainer talked my fiance out of giving him time off.
Luckily for the horse, we ran out of spare money during the building of our house and we brought him home.
Since then he has perked up and the couple of times he has gone back for lessons,(different triner) he has done really well. He missed his futurity year, but at least he is healthy now.
NCHA has rules for different medications, and ulcer treatment may be one, now that they have finally recognized horses can have this problem

Quick note on ulcers/treatment. One of the vets at our clinic was on the
original research team that worked for Gastroguard (omeprazole). I have been
riding a horse that I suspected might have ulcers. I talked to him about
treatment, conditions, etc. I asked him if the condition would eventually
resolve - the ulcers heal - if the stress conditions were removed. (i.e.
travel, competition). He said yes, the gastric lining can heal on it's own,
the best situation for healing would be to have the horse on free choice
pasture - or 24/7 forage - for at least a month. And then if/when you put
the horse back into work/competition (or stress) use Ulcerguard (1/4 dose
omeprazole)for the week of transition, and/or regular use for prevention of
re-ulceration.

Gastroguard....

The biggest advantage to scoping to me would getting a definitive diagnosis
and seeing the extent of the damage so if you recheck later you can see how
she's responding to treatment.

Good luck

My mare was diagnosed with Ulcers today. I know this has been discussed
alot, but could y'all share some treatments (natural and regular
medicine). Are there any advantages/disadvantages to scoping or not?
It's quite a chunk of change in my area.

Also, I'm looking for Alfalfa hay in the Piedmont of NC. Pure Alfalfa
for the ulcer mare. If anyone knows of anything...

Thanks!
Steph
