RE: [RC] Bitless Bridle [tm] - Tracey Lomax

I'm not sure exactly what bitless bridle you're talking about, and I
don't do endurance, so hit "delete" now if you're already pissed off at
my interfering.

I've got a bitless bridle which basically looks like a two strips of
leather. The one at the back threads through two loops at each end of
the one at the front of the nose, and attaches to the reins. Basically,
it's a cavesson with rings and if you pull the reins, the noseband
tightens and, I presume, puts pressure on the front of the nose.

I've used it on a bucking bronco of a horse who used to deck me quite
liberally and quite hard whenever we had a good gallop in company on an
outride. It didn't stop him bucking, but it DID stop him bucking hard
enough to get me off. His bucks were the "grab the bit stick your nose
between your knees, launch yourself skyward and when you're as high as
you can go, flick your back feet out" kind of bucks. The minute I
removed the bit, I removed his "first move" and all he could manage was
a pathetic wiggle.

I've since then jumped him in it (although never at competition) and
used it when out hacking. The bucking issues have more of less resolved
themselves and I've misplaced the bitless bridle.

So I guess that it can give you control depending on the degree of
control you're looking for. My horse objected quite violently to
anything other than a double jointed snaffle, and he wasn't particularly
hard to stop, his issue was the bucking. The other thing I found in the
bitless bridle was that he tended to be more relaxed, and he used
himself better in the canter, was more inclined to push himself with his
arse than pull himself through his shoulders.

I'd use one on any of my youngsters in a nanosecond if it wasn't illegal
for dressage.

Tracey
