Re: [RC] conditioning on old roads - heidi larson

I condition alot on old and new logging roads and have not had any problems.  One retired horse has been barefoot for the past 7 years and does fine on the roads, he's got shoes now as he's being ridden more, no lameness issue. (He has an old fetlock injury but even that seems pretty cold and doesn't seem to bother him much, the injury wasn't related to the roads.)  My current horse has GC plastic on the front, steel on the back.  He's doing great going into his 4th season.  Roads are very heavily graveled, some big rock, lots of steep riding, we don't trot downhill and pick our fast areas carefully however.

We were doing a lot of miles and years on these roads....had horses in teens into 20;s....various slight unsoundnesses.....how can you be sure what caused it?

Before you switched to barefoot, did these horses have lameness issues directly attributable to the hard road and steel shoes?
