[RC] Underage horses - Budler,Cindy - AfroxIn South Africa we have an age rule of horses being allowed to compete in 30 km rides only from the age of 4 years old and only in the longer distances form 4,5 yrs onwards. It is easy to enforce as each horse has to have a passport to compete - even in 30km rides. The official FEI passport is compulsory with all the horses details, markings, vaccinations etc. This passport is also a logbook of all the rides results and times for that horse. It goes with the horse to the Vet at the inspections and at the pre ride vetting all the details are checked - marking , age, vaccinations etc. It is the same as our rider logbook system - easy to check up on a riders memberships, mileages, age etc. We have become very disciplined with these books and it really has made administration easier- all the data is available at entry time and the results just get written into the books at the end of the day prior to prize giving. There the certificates, prizes and logbooks are all handed back to the rider.We do have a secondary check on horse and rider as both of them are input onto the ride programme for the timing system and results and the master database then checks their details as it happens. That way we pick up any glitches or possible problems.
