Re: [RC] Drooling Horse - Kristine Johnson

My 16 year old Arab had a bad drooling problem when I got him. Turned out that one of his teeth was worn in a way, that a "pocket" was trapping food, and causing the drool. This was only 6 month after he had a dental done. He got another one, and this cured the drooling. We figure he will need to get floated twice a year from now on.
If your vet laughs at you when you call him out for a drooling horse, I suggest you find a new vet ! Drooling can also be a sign of choking, which can kill your horse. It is not something to be taken lightly.

I have a 16 year old saddle bred Arab pinto gelding
who seems to me to be drinking an excessive amount of
water. His diet consists of beet pulp, senior and
cubes at night and just hay in the morning. When ever
I look down at the barn water trough he seems to be
drinking. I have also noticed that he drools at
times, not related to recent drinking. Just phlegmy,
drools about four inches hanging from his mouth.
Checked for sores in his mouth and there are none.
Any thoughts???? My vet might laugh at me paying him
to tell me I am crazy!!!
