[RC] Question about hay--- help! - Bette Lamore

Hi there
A client is bringing me hay from Iowa -- second and third cutting alfalfa that has been in the barn. He was originally bringing 240 bales which I understand how to feed. Now he writes:
"bringing 6500lbs of hay that 16bales at just over 400lbs per bale. 2 high across the goose neck trailer thats 30 by 8."
I have never fed hay in this form. I have a pasture with 15 geldings/mares and then a large paddock with 3 mares and then a large paddock with a mare and 2 foals (yes, my wonderful Silver adopted an orphan) and a stallion pasture with a mare and stallion and another with 2 stallions.
My question is this: do I just put a huge bale in with my 15 pasture horses and then buy hay from the local feed store for the smaller pastures/paddocks? Do the big bales break up into mega flakes???? Thanks for any light on the matter.
Bette, who is a CA girl unused to the Midwest feeding practices.
