I have had someone else mention risks of the breast collar itself. Like you, I think the benefits far outweigh the risks. I count myself lucky that Cody did not break a leg when he got tangled in the saddle that was hanging under his belly. That is not a risk I want to take with him again. When it comes to how we equip ourselves and our horses, we will all ultimately make our own decisions. The best we can do for each other is to share our experiences. Hopefully, those shared experiences can help us each make our own decisions as we continue share our lives with horses. Nikki True, so let me offer a comment FWIW: I believe there are safety advantages to the use of a breast collar even on horses that don't "need" them. Tack can break, a girth can get loose, shit happens -- and the breast collar is an extra line of defense against a saddle turning under the horse. I've heard the suggestion that there is a danger of a stick running up under a breast collar and causing an injury, but in well over 12,000 miles of competition (and an unknown amount of other riding) I've never seen it happen, nor heard of any case of that happening. I know of lots of cases of saddles getting under horse's bellies. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
