Re: [RC] RVI (was Legend and Adequan) - Sharon LevasseurYep, just had an in-depth conversation with the prescribing vet, and he agrees that RVI and Legend/Adequan have different uses. In my scenario, he said RVI may very well help Zephyr heal an upper leg muscle soreness he's been dealing with... but that IF the soreness is compensatory because of his previously inflammed deep digital flexor tendon, then it may not help for long because we won't have solved the underlying issue. If that's the case I'll have some blocking done so we can see if that tendon is still bothering him. If so, he says he'd either inject the joint (he mentioned hyuralonic acid i.e. Legend), or have another shockwave session done on him. That would help reduce any scar tissue / inflammation that might be around the tendon and the navicular bone. (He actually recommended the shockwave therapy since it's less invasive... either that or injecting into the coffin joint instead of the navicular bursa... he says there's a good deal of risk involved when you inject through a tendon like you have to with the nav-bursa injection.) So... for now... I have some RVI that I will use for 6 days with the vet's blessing. If it resolves the upper-leg soreness, great. If not, the vet agrees that it can't hurt him! Thanks for all y'all's help understanding this stuff. -Sharon L. Quoting Barb Peck <bpeck9191@xxxxxxxxxxxx>: Sharon; Here's a quote from the site you listed (Rubella Virus Immunomodulator- RVI) "According to Kline, the precise mechanism by which RVI works is still not completely known. But it appears that RVIâ??s selectivity involves only those parts of the system causing the inflammation." So what that meas is that it's an immunosuppressor that selectively inhibits certain cells. And it also implies- or more than implies if you read their literature - that they're talking about the inflammation produced during an auto-immune event. RVI may be the same mechanism as ENBREL is for humans that have Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) ENBREL targets and supresses TNF-a... I'd look into this closer- maybe RVI an momoclonal antibody (just like ENBREL) and patented - so it's not considered a "drug" therefore race horses can use it due to the grey area in the definition of a "drug". Remember that owners of race horses really want to get the animal though the next race- and endurance riders really want the horse to go a lifetime... there are different veterinary practices for each of those scenarios (and that was told to me a track Vet!) I'd not put RVI in the same category as Legend and Adequan... it is not comparing apples to apples.
