[RC] snakebite to the nose - Heidi VanderbiltMy vet told me that the structure of the horse's nose will, in most cases, prevent it from swelling shut. After a bite, the swelling tissue can make an awful noise as air goes in and out, but he says there is very little danger of suffocation. He did say, however, that there is danger of perforation by these tubes. IOne of our yearlings got bitten twice last summer, once on each nostril. His nose became HUGE. We gave him antibiotics and pain meds and in a week he was normal. We have had seven bites to our dogs and one to our cat. We treated them every possible way, from full out veterinary treatment with antivenom and IV fluids, to some over the counter benadril when the vet wasn't available. Every time, the animal swelled up for about five days, then returned to normal. Our neighbors don't treat snake bite at all and their dogs get nailed several times a year. I'm not minimizing the danger of these bites. They can and sometimes do kill. We keep steroids, antibiotics and pain meds here and use them. I also have a length of surgical tubing, just in case. I live in SE Arizona. Our snake bites are from rattlers. We have one here called a Mojave that is pretty deadly, and some animals are more sensitive othan others.
