RE: [RC] LASIK (was Did you know??) - Alison FarrinHowever, if you are nearsighted in both eyes, correcting one to 20/15 or 20/20 and correcting the other somewhat less will preserve you close vision (or improve it!) even when you are losing it due to age. I had the first eye LASIK'd to 20/15 last year, then corrected the other one to about 20/30 just a few months ago and I can still read 6 pt type as long as the light is halfway decent. I expect (at age 50) to get at least 5 more years without resorting to reading glasses. Prior to the second correction, I was using reading glasses about 50% of the time. Now, no problem. I can't wait to go swimming this summer without worrying about losing a contact lens! Alison A. Thanks for speaking up, I didn't realize those were different conditions! -Sharon L. Quoting Lynn Kinsky <lkinsky@xxxxxxxxxx>: IF they need reading glasses because of far-sightedness (hyperopia: http://www.aoa.org/x1781.xml ). LASIK can correct the focal length of the lens. Age-related need for reading glasses is presbyopia (http://www.aoa.org/x1785.xml) and stems from a different process that a focal length correction won't help. -- Lynn Kinsky, Santa Ynez, CA http://www.silcom.com/~lkinsky/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
