[RC] insulin resistance - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Cyndi Rach hoovinit@xxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Insulin resistance is best controlled through diet and exercise; I found out my morgan mare had this issue when she foundered 6 years ago. She was overweight at the time and had a very cresty neck. She has always been a very "easy keeper" which is a characteristic of insulin resistance. She had been on bermuda pasture. These horses need to be on a low carb diet and unfortunately fresh grass is very high in sugar content. I've been able to keep her weight under control through diet. Grass hay for the most part(no pasture); I also feed her a little bit of Seniorglo (by the same company as Moorglo rice bran) which is a low carb mix. I give her occassional carrots and apples and a teeny bit of alfalfa for a treat but not every day.Because of the damage done to her hooves she has also been kept barefoot since the foundering incident. She can only handle light trail riding because of her feet. I wish I'd known about the insulin resistance before the damage was done!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
