Re: [RC] racing ettiquette, is there such a thing? - Diane TrefethenJoe's response is excellent. I would add just one thing to his comment, "I see stopping to help a rider in need as good sportsmanship, WITHOUT expecting a quid-pro-quo in return." There IS a quid-pro-quo and that is the next time YOU see someone in need, YOU stop to help - what goes around comes around. But you can't equate stopping to help with not trying to beat the other guy. You can only equate stopping to help with stopping to help.On not rushing up to a drinking horse or waiting while the other horses finish, Joe said, "I would never want to win a race by depriving another rider's horse of drinking as much as it needs." This goes to the same rationale AGAINST cheating. When you cut trail or otherwise cheat to win, you may get a prize and the reputation of being a winner but in truth, you haven't won at all. You've beaten the others by using an advantage that they didn't have; you've won on an uneven playing field. When you cause another horse not to drink its fill, you've done the same thing, taken an advantage that is not now available to the other horse AND you've hurt that other horse in the process. You have behaved in both a cruel and unsportsmanlike manner. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
