[RC] Feeding Round Bales - Alissa CowanAmber,I always fed round bales on the really cool little four wheeled wooden wagons that we had sitting around. The tongue would tuck back nicely under the wagon, so nothing stuck out to catch on horse's legs. The nice part of this was: 1) hay was up off the ground so it could stay drier and not get spread all over the ground and 2) if the area where we were feeding hay got really torn up, we just hitched the little wagon to the tractor and moved it to another area. Very cool! I always hate that the area around the round bale feeders tends to get muddy and gross because that's where the horses spend the most time. If you can't get round bales inside, store them up above the ground (got any pallets?) and cover well with a tarp. Although, I wonder - if you cover TOO well with a tarp, will round bales begin to mold under the tarp because moisture cannot escape? Alissa We have always fed square bales to our horses but will be round baling our own fields. I'm wondering if we should just start feeding round bales in one of those feeders, not just on the ground. I'm concerned about storage, too, as we store square bales in our barn but would not be able to get round bales inside the barn.
