[RC] Allergies in horses - Julie FullerHi guys,A good friend of mine has a new horse that seems to have allergies. No bloodwork has been done, yet. This mare is kept stabled at night, turn-out during the day. She is fed grass hay and whole oats. and gets vitamins, biotin, digest aid, BOSS and flax. She was being fed COB, which was cut out completely when the vet suggested she was allergic to corn. (Shortly after she was started on COB, she developed hives, began rubbing on everything, was grumpy, and had edema as evidence by a cresty neck, which went down immeadiately after taking her off the COB) Now the mare is itchy off and on, and has swollen glands in her neck (near the throatlatch)off and on as well. Oh, and mild snotty nose. It has been suggested to put the mare on Benedryl for a week and see if that helps. But the vet says Benedryl doesn't work on horses. Any comments there? The vet suggested bloodwork to look for histamine response, though he said this wasn't a real good way to check for allergies. Cost: $100 Also suggested was the skin tests for allergies as a better way to pin down what she may be allergic to. Cost: $300 Does anyone have any other suggestions? This mare is going to be at my place soon, and will be on pasture 24/7. I am curious to see if she gets better when she isn't in a stall, thinking perhaps it's the cedar chips. That would be an easy one, huh? *grin* And perhaps wishful thinking.
