I was looking for info on body scoring the other
day & found myself on a website devoted to closing some auction at or near
New Holland. The had photos of horses that had been taken to auction in horrible
condition, severely wounded, down & blood dripping through the trailer,
mares who I assumed had foundered perhaps after birthing and kept alive to
suckle their foals until they were old enough to do without or maybe a nurse
mare found, and the foundered mare having blood oozing from the coronary band,
taken to the auction.....I think this is the type of auction associated
incidents that they are trying to stop. These horses apparently have no pain
medication and suffer tremendously before sometimes being beaten to make them
stand so they can be hooked up to something (can't remember all the details)
whipped up into the air & then, finally, put to death by whacking their
heads or slitting their throats (again, can't remember the exact details). Now,
I'm not saying this is the norm at auctions, nor can I vouch for the truth
posted on the website, but it does seem a horribly inhumane way to treat
any animal.
