Those whips make a frightening impression on a canine
I'd just like to say, I have seven, sometimes eight dogs on my place (along with the sixteen horses).  My horses get along okay with the dogs who live with me (out in the country, 100 acres or so).

BUT, when I find myself on the road conditioning off the property and one of the surly types of protective farm dogs come out and wants to harass my horse and I...I turn my horse to the dog, quickly, and allow my horse to protect me and himself/herself.  I have had no dog, ever, NOT immediately understand the intent of my horse or me.  "Fight or Flight" doesn't always mean my horse is going to "turn tail and run" and the dogs along the way, have figured that out.

When we've sufficiently intimidated the dog, I quietly move away from the dog...should the dog then believe the move away is weakness and comes back at us, I direct my horse to, once again, teach the dog to leave us alone.

This method, I'm sure, is not for everyone.  Heck, it's not even something I like to do, but in the situation, I'm doing it.
