Your dog will draw more dogs and you'll have to defend him too. As for spray...The "Halt" spray that the meter reader carries comes out in a heavy stream, like hornet spray. Water from your waterbottle might help. Biker riders do that. I have actually gotten off my horse to face off a dog that was being really aggressive towards my horse but I *knew* would back off from a human. If it's a dog you pass often (like on your road), not just one you ran into in the park, nothing works better than a tossed firecracker.
