The CO2 that comes from oil or coal was removed from the atmosphere millions of years ago, so when it goes back there is a net gain in the CO2 in the air, compared to say 100 years ago. The CO2 produced when modern plants or plant products are burned, was removed from the air (by the plant) a year or two ago, so there is no net change in the atmosphere, compared to a year ago.
