There was a net gain, but it was not a whole lot. Last I heard Brazil has been successful with their ethanol efforts. But they are a special case. No oil. Lots of tropical land. Low waged workers. etc. By the way, the tropical climate helps both for increased growing season, and not having to worry that the auto won't start in cold weather. Personally, I think we should be looking into syn fuel from Coal. We got lots of coal, and the WWII German experience in running such plants provides a good start.
