Re: [RC] Fw: [RC] Panacur Purge - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM - Lori Bertolucci

I usually do the purge right after our last frost of the season...which this year still hasn't happpened! Expecting more snow tonite or tomorrow nite! So I don't think that could be it.
He has had the last couple of years off from any serious riding...building a house and me getting injured... So that has helped with his weight being the best it ever has. I will have a blood test done again this spring to see where he stands, but last summer he was still showing low red count.
Is there a natural way for horses to get their iron, without supplimenting?

I've never had to deal with an anemic horse, and have no knowledge in that area. However, when I was researching the "purge" information, I found this ridecamp post. My vet has advised the same thing, and even went so far as to say if you don't do it at the proper time, no sense in doing it at all. It might help your horse to change the timing on your purge. I do  have a very hard keeper 16 yr old mare. After doing the purge in early January, with no change in her diet, she has gained considerable weight, and is nicely rounded out now.

I do a Panacur Purge every spring on all my horses, then follow up with regular wormings there after. That being said, Gambler was in very poor health when I got him, so I may just need to repair, so to speak, the damage that was done prior to my getting him....

So now the question is, what is the best way to rebuild red blood cells?

RE: [RC] Panacur Purge - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM

Dear Karen et al:

The Panacur Purge has the advantage of killing younger worms.  There are encysted small strongyles that are too young to be killed by Quest.  Some people like the Panacur Purge also, because it is gentler than Quest.

As a footnote, a manufacturers rep reported to me that 1.5x for three days has almost 90% efficacy as 2x for five days, at obvious cost and labor savings.

Quentin

PS.   The only advantage of Quest or the Purge is to kill the encysted small strongyle.  This is a problem thru the winter months, as the cysts reduce the absorption of food.  The life cycle of the small strongyle is timed with the season, so that the larvae wait in cysts in the wall of the gut (I think small intestine) for spring, when they are released  en masse to pollute your pasture.  Killing them in the winter with either Quest or Panacur, not only helps the animal now, but is sanitation for next season.  Thus there is really no point in using either method at other times of year, as ivermectin is otherwise a broader spectrum wormer.
