Chances are good (if you are anything like me) the reason that most
western saddles kill your knees is that the stirrups are not yet fully
"turned." (Although, the wrong twist can also have this effect).

I have ridden in a number of western saddles that DID have a narrow
enough twist for me and the stirrups had been well turned. If
non-turned stirrups are your problem, the thickness of the fenders puts
undue stress on your knee because the stirrup is constantly turning your
foot toward the belly of the horse.

To turn the stirrups of a western saddle, wet down the fenders, twist
the stirrups outwards, and stick a broom handle (I have used a 2x4)
though them while it is stored. If you oil and supple the fenders
really well every time before you store it in this way, the process will
take less time.

After I started riding in a western saddle that was over 70 years old,
and the "sore knees" problem just didn't exist, I learned to appreciate
a well turned stirrup.
