RE: [RC] For those who feed...... - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Try 60% whole oats, 25% rolled barley and 15% steam/flaked corn. Or, just feed whole oats and skip the other two entirely. Corn has more energy pound for pound, but also more mineral imbalances and is pretty high in starch---more likely to cause colicky issues. My rule of thumb (based on actual science, not just my opinion) is no more than 2-3 pounds of grain per feeding and no more than 5-6 pounds of grain total per day, regardless of the level of production the horse is working at (including lactation, pregnancy, etc). If they need more calories than that, better to start adding in some soaked beet pulp and a fat source before loading up on tons of grain. Good luck. For those who feed Oats,Barley and corn what it the mixture? I have to mix it my self because the mill will only mix 2000lbs or more. And since I only have one horse that is really not a option. Thanks again! Andra =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
