Incidentally,
it is considered "inappropriate" to tip your hairstylist as well, if s/he is the
person who owns the salon. And I have yet to meet a farrier who doesn't
own his/her own business (not saying that they don't exist, just that I have
never met one).

Actually that is
not so true anymore. In our region most of the people working in salons who do
not own them are leasing a chair, so they are self-employed. Typically they can
make more money than the salon owner as they make their "rent" in one day. The
salon owner has to pay rent/utilities/receptionist, etc. So maybe we should
all be tipping the owner as thats probably the one who needs it the
most.;-) As a hairstylist, I truly believe that tipping is not required. It
should be a personal decision. I do not look down on my clients who don't tip.
Some do, some don't. And I am a salon owner. (sorry, off topic a
bit)
