[RC] Anti-Biotics (was: needles) - katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxxAngie said: I started giving all antibiotics in pill form a long time ago. It finally hit me "why am I sticking my horse twice a day when I don't have to?" I think it depends on which anti-biotic you are giving, since not all anti-biotics are created equal, so the right anti-biotic depends on the disease/condition you are trying to treat. Some of them don't come in an oral form. I am pretty sure that procaine penecillan (which is what most people are giving when they give the injectable form) doesn't. A cheap, convenient, and usually unoffensive oral anti-biotic that is commonly given is SMZ tablets; however, it is not effective against all diseases (Strangles is one that comes to mind), so it may not be what the vet prescribes. And the wrong anti-biotic is of dubious value to the horse. Other oral anti-biotics are not so cheap (which I found out last year when I had to pony up a ridiculous sum of money for clorumphenocol (sp??) because there was no WAY that my wicked horse was going to stand still for being injected with procaine penicillan so the vets were unwilling to send her home with that drug and those instructions :)). When she was in the hospital, she was getting IV anti-biotics via an in place catheter...and it still required two people to get her tied so she would stand still for long enough to let them do that. They didn't believe me when I told them that she would stand still for me to give her penicillan...so I got the solid gold designer oral anti-biotic instead (and rubber gloves to keep from getting that stuff on my hands). "Just give them orally" isn't always the best option, if the anti-biotic of choice doesn't come in that form. kat Orange County, Calif. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
