[RC] teaching horses to drink - Cindy CollinsOne of the things I've done with the last three horses I've started is to take them places and be sure to put out feed and water even if it's not necessary. When I take them to dressage lessons, I offer them water. If they have to be tied to my trailer FOR ANY REASON, I put out a hay bag and a small bucket of water. This becomes normal to them. It really has worked for me. After training rides, there are buckets of water on the trailer where I unsaddle. I just took my new mare (coming 5) to a dressage clinic about an hour away from home. When we got there, I unloaded her, tied her to the trailer-just like I would at a ride, tied on a hay bag and put out a bucket of water. She was in a new place and there were 6-7 other rigs with horses coming and going. She drank 1/2 the bucket, then proceeded to eat her hay. After our little lesson, I tied her back at the trailer and left her there while I watched the event. She drank another bucket of water and ate all of her hay. Although we were doing "dressage," she was learning to eat and drink at endurance rides. Just a thought for newbies.
