Re: [RC] Novice horses and speed and distance - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

So, how reasonable is it to expect a novice
horse to carry you over that distance for that amount of time if you'regoing at
a snail's pace? Would it not be better to go at around 14kph(8-9 mph) than 11
kph (7 mph)?

I don't consider 7 mph a snail's pace. I believe that was the pace the cavalry
considered ideal to cover ground. It's relaxed but moving out. I definately
consider 8-9 mph booking. 9 is less than a 6 hr 50,heck, 8mph is 48 miles in 6
hrs.

Also, what do you think of starting a novice horse in shorter distances(

I don't like it. The two new horses we are starting are 7 and 11 so they're
mature. The 11 year old has done a lot of non-endurance trail rides and we've
been riding the 7 year old almost 2 years. They both carry themselves well and
we're both lightweights. I think a HW may need more base, but I don't think
going 9mph would help at all.
