Re: [RC] Low Tech and electrolytes - Barbara McCraryHOWEVER, Lud's horse was always a poor drinker and had not drunk any water until that 35 mile vet check. It is not terribly unusual for a multi-day ride to have only one vet check. All the multi-day rides I've ever done had only one vet check. And...I've done a few where the only vet check WAS at 35 miles because there was no way to access the trail anywhere else.As for Lud's horse, he did not drink that day at the one water stop before the vet check, and when he arrived at the vet check, he drank too little before I gave him his electrolytes. It was my error, but only because I knew too little about e-lytes. That one experience left me with the feeling that I may never use e-lytes again. I feel that maybe less is better....just lots of good hay, and some extra grain-beetpulp-rice bran slurry on a ride day. I'm not convinced that horses need all the extra supplements that are available now. A wise vet once told me, "The more products there are on the market designed to cure (fill in the blank), only indicates that no one has discovered a real cure."
