[RC] Hay Shortage - Bruce WearyThere's a relatively new product called Chaffhaye that I have been feeding lately, and my horses and I really like it. It is alfalfa haylage in air-tight bags, with a very high moisture content. It is consistent, has a good shelf life, and the horses eat it readily. I feed it half and half with grass hay. Due to the 50% moisture content, the protein content is only about 10% as fed. The horses will eat their fill and walk away when they are satisfied, as they get better gut fill sooner than with dry hay. They lose their hay bellies (if they have one), and there is no problem with spoilage. It has natural yeasts in it, and so far everything they have said about the product has been very true. The company is based out of New Mexico, and I'm not sure how widely it's distibuted. It is NOT the same product as Alfalfa and Molasses, although it does have a slight amount or molasses added, which is largely consumed by the yeasts by the time the horses eat it. If you can get it in your neck of the woods, you might want to try it. There is more good information on their website.
